US regulator shuts Keystone pipeline over leaks

While the US State Dept considers whether to permit TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL pipeline extension to the Gulf Coast, the US Department of Transportation – specifically the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) – has ordered the existing Keystone pipeline stay shut due to recent leaks.

Opponents of the pipeline point to this as evidence of safety issues with the pipeline project. The “Corrective Action Order” lays out conditions that have to be met before the pipeline can reopen.
